![]() ![]() The best way we can help the environment is to reuse our clothing (avoid overconsumption) and buy secondhand when needed. ![]() So are we really helping the environment by buying “plastic bottle fashion”? No, we’re not. What stood out most to me in that article is that less than 1% of all clothing is recycled into new clothing. This article called “The Myth of Sustainable Fashion” by Harvard Business Review is also a great read when it comes to getting a better understanding of sustainability in the fashion industry of what works and doesn’t work. This article by Well and Good does a fantastic job of explaining why plastic water bottle clothing is not great for the environment. (Whereas, if it’s made into another plastic bottle, it continues its lifecycle.) There are A LOT of clothing companies jumping on this bandwagon and claiming they’re sustainable – including Rothy’s.)Ī post shared by Passion Lilie sum this up, the main reason a piece of clothing made of recycled water bottles is not great for the environment is that once a plastic bottle is made into clothing, it won’t be recycled again…it will end up in a landfill. (And in defense of Vivaia shoes – they are not the only company who is doing this. However, here is why this is more of a marketing ploy (aka Greenwashing) than actually being a sustainable practice. The Vivaia Shoes website (and their marketing team) swear they are helping the planet and they are saving the world by making shoes out of plastic bottles. Brands like this have taught me A LOT about what to look for when selecting where to purchase my clothing from. I’ve started working with incredible sustainable and fair trade brands – like Passion Lilie and Carry Courage. However, over the last couple of years, this is something I have been focusing on for myself… getting a better understanding of how to shop for sustainable clothing, purchasing high-quality items that will last for years vs fast fashion, and buying secondhand when possible. In full disclosure, I have a lot to learn and a lot to correct with my own purchasing behavior when it comes to sustainability. I will however take a step back from my personal views, and review the overall quality of Vivaia shoes, their shipping and return policy (my experience actually using their return policy), how well Vivaia shoes hold up in the wash, and whether or not I recommend the shoes from a comfort and quality standpoint.īuckle up! This review of Vivaia shoes has A LOT to unpack. This post is going to explain why I think that, and why this company really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. ![]() This company smells of Greenwashing, and there are just too many red flags to give this company the benefit of the doubt. I have since ordered a pair of “sustainable” boots (for the purpose of this post), and they have also sent me a pair of their new Aria 5 flats.Ī lot of reviews focus on how “sustainable” and “ethical” Vivaia shoes are. My relationship with Vivaia shoes began in early 2021 when their affiliate marketing team offered to send me a pair of their “sustainable” Aria 2.0 flats to try. This post is my brutally honest review of Vivaia shoes, and why I don’t love this company. I have A LOT to say on the subject of Vivaia shoes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Outside looking in, Donda 2 is hilarious. He was dead wrong when he said he needs to be off his meds to keep making good music. However, his music has also clearly suffered as a consequence. Yes, the immediate and most important consequence of this decision is how badly he's hurt and is currently hurting the people closest to him. It probably goes without saying, but this shift in quality and priorities could be connected to Kanye being off his meds. ![]() ![]() The radio silence leading up to Yeezus’ release almost 9 years ago seems quaint now. On the other hand, “Christian” Kanye has been less focused on the music and more so with extravagant promotion cycles and unnecessary drama. This intense attention to detail is what defines old Kanye. What arguably defines Yeezus isn't so much its left field sound (though that's obviously part of its appeal), but the fact that Kanye clearly focused on making a tight, concise record. Like Jesus is King and both Dondas, Yeezus sounds like the aural equivalent to Kanye's manic episodes. In a way, Yeezus epitomizes the contrast between the old and new Kanye. For this reason, it's impossible to "separate the art from the artist" and exposes the record's core problem:ĭonda 2 is solely compelling for its spectacle and nothing else. With most "memorable" lines relating to Kanye related drama, one can't help but feel Donda 2's context renders its already underwhelming music forgettable. The slew of threats aimed at Pete "Skete" Davidson on "Security" is chilling enough to make even an atheist pray for the man's safety. On "Sci Fi," Kanye raps "when you lay down and I give you the semen, I swear I heard God, the voice of Morgan Freeman'' and it's impossible to not feel intense second-hand embarrassment. Sure, there's occasionally the usual so-bad-it's-post-ironically-iconic bar like "baby, I'm free like a homeless person" on "Broken Road." However, the lyrics across Donda 2 are often uncharacteristically embarassing or even downright uncomfortable. With such lackluster content, it becomes easy to focus on how distractingly bad Kanye's lyrics have gotten.Īnyone familiar with Kanye knows he's got some notoriously bad bars across his discography. The features across the tracklist, while decent, aren't memorable enough to save the album either. The songwriting is arguably at its worst here as well with songs blurring into one another or outright sounding unfinished. The beats throughout Donda 2 are a rehash of Ye's generic pop/trap rap sound, marking it as one of Kanye's least creative musical outings. In sheer contrast, Donda 2 is drenched in drama and negativity. In retrospect, Jesus Is King is harmless and even wholesome. Finishing this album made me appreciate Jesus Is King so much more, though not necessarily for the music. Review Summary: Simulataneously one of the most hilarious and harrowing pop albums released in recent yearsĮverything about Donda 2 actively upsets me because of how utterly unpleasant a listening experience it is. ![]() ![]() ![]() He mentions that small towns are difficult to escape and says it in such a way that there’s clear extra meaning behind the words. The fantasy breaking down is supported in what Vision experiences when seeing Doctor Nielsen (Randy Oglesby) off. The show does a good job of leaving Wanda ambiguous and for now waiting for the answers remains compelling. Reality is definitely crashing into this strange fantasy but Wanda’s part in it remains unknown. Elizabeth Olsen’s performance as Wanda shifts from the comedic sitcom housewife persona to her true self is excellent and the unsettling way she delivers the explanation that “Geraldine” had to rush home to Vision was the right kind of eerie. Either way she’s clearly uncomfortable with the truth and would rather be rid of “Geraldine” than continue to think about it so she uses her powers to get her out of the way. ![]() It’s unclear whether the break in character is a deliberate choice on her part or if her twin children prompted her to snap out of whatever brainwashing has been inflicted on her long enough to remember her own past. ![]() ![]() There is evidence so far that Wanda is being manipulated in some way and that all of this is being done to her but at the same time she has a lot of control over the world around her so it’s possible that she sees the situation as idyllic and wants to preserve that. It’s a brief but vitally important exchange that raises a few questions. Her sword -or is it S.W.O.R.D.?- necklace is identified by Wanda as a threat and she deals with it. She references her brother Pietro -who was killed in Avengers: Age of Ultron– and appears to open up to “Geraldine” who directly references Ultron and causes Wanda to go on the defensive. For the most part “Geraldine” appears to blend into her surroundings in the same way everyone else does but there’s a particularly interesting moment following the birth of the twins where Wanda breaks out of the sitcom persona to reminisce about being a twin herself. There is a strong case for her having chosen to be a part of this fictional setting in the way she reacts to “Geraldine”. One thing that remains unclear is how aware Wanda is of everything around her being false. This is evident to the audience because of the way the altered reality is presented and evolves as the episodes progress but the characters are barely aware of it most of the time. There is more forward movement on the notion that the world the show currently takes place in isn’t real. It could be my comedy preferences leading me to that conclusion but it was noticeable that some of the gags dragged on. The indirect references to pregnancy stages with the burst pipes signifying the water breaking and the stork heralding the arrival of the babies made for some amusing touches but this episode more than the other two milked the gags for longer than was necessary. There have been numerous examples throughout the MCU movies she has appeared in of her powers being tied to her emotions and this episode supports that wonderfully. These events act as a period appropriate reference to how something like this might be handled during the sitcoms of the period being presented but also act as a reminder of how powerful Wanda is and how difficult it is for her to control her powers. Discussing how she feels causes those feelings to manifest physically in some way, contractions cause power outages, her water breaking causes pipes to burst and so on. There are gags about how quickly it seems to have happened, confusion around how to deal with it and general communication mix ups between the expectant parents but none of it is taken that seriously as it’s just another wacky adventure as far as they’re concerned.Īs with the previous episodes Wanda’s biggest concern is fitting in which proves difficult when a pregnancy runs its course practically overnight and activates Wanda’s powers in very obvious ways. In this episode, Wanda’s pregnancy is progressing at a rate far faster than normal which should be more of a cause for concern than it is but thanks to the light sitcom backdrop it’s regarded as a charming inconvenience that can used to mine comedy. ![]() ![]() ![]() In addition to not being able to use red nails and the Spirit tool, a divine mode shaman cannot use yellow nails which connect and stabilize most objects, nor can they use a totem. After saving 5,000 total mice, 2,000 being in hard mode, a player will unlock the 'divine mode' Shaman setting, a setting released as an update on May 26, 2014. A completed totem construction can be summoned instantly as a hard mode Shaman and is immediately functional, but may only be summoned once per map. Totems can be constructed with up to 20 objects, but only one red nail may be used as an anchor. In lieu of this, hard mode Shamans can create a pre-made 'totem', which is constructed on an in-game editor map. Spirit is the only object allowed to be cast outside of summoning range. In hard mode, a Shaman cannot use red nails which anchor an object solidly, nor can they use the Spirit tool, which can push mice and objects with a flash of light. Upon reaching 1,000 total saves as a Shaman, a player can choose to become a 'hard mode' Shaman. Blue nails connect two objects but are loose and can rotate. Yellow nails connect to most other objects, particularly red-nailed ones, and keep an object's placement, but can move. Red nails keep an object firmly grounded and will not move, but it can rotate on the anchor. A Shaman can 'anchor' or connect planks and boxes to other world objects or summoned objects with various-colored nails. The Shaman can do so by summoning objects such as planks, boxes, anvils, spirit, and balloons to create buildings or contraptions such as bridges to cross gaps or various other obstacles. Doing so will award the Shaman with "saves" for each mouse who completes the map, which are recorded onto the player's profile. The general objective of the Shaman is to help the other mice obtain the cheese and bring it back to the hole. When a player reaches the highest score on the scoreboard, they will become a Shaman in the next map involving one. Dying adds one point to a player's score on the scoreboard, no matter what time in the game it is or the cause of death. The timer will change to 20 seconds if the Shaman dies or there if are only two mice left on the map. Maps can instantly switch before the time limit if all players complete the map or die. Maps have a general time limit of two minutes, at which time a new map is loaded. Players are also given extra recognition in their stats for finishing first when there are eleven or more players in the room. Collecting cheese is recorded into a player's permanent stats when there are about 2 or more players in the room. Bonus points are awarded for players who place first, second or third. Players are awarded points on a scoreboard that is updated in real-time. The number of cheese and mouse holes varies between maps. After which, the player must take the collected cheese back to the map's mouse hole to finish. Players' mice must touch the cheese to collect it. Players control a mouse with the arrow keys or the WASD keys to run, duck, jump and perform various techniques, such as wall jumping, long jumping, turn arounds, and corner jumping. The main objective of the game is to collect a piece of cheese placed in at least one location on a map. Hearts indicate a mouse who has brought the cheese to the hole. Bubbles indicate a mouse who falls off the map. The argument is that, since each State enjoys the same number of Electoral College votes regardless of how many voters actually vote within each State, the States have no incentive to promote voter registration and participation.įinally the Electoral College system has been criticized for allowing a handful of “states” to command far more than their fair share of attention and political influence than they deserve. The Electoral College has also been criticized for re-inforcing low voter turnout. Had 118,000 votes been cast differently in Ohio, President Bush would have lost an election that he deserved to win, despite that difference being less than 0.1% of the greater than 120 million votes cast. In 2004, President Bush won the popular vote, but Senator Kerry lost Ohio by only 118,000 votes. There have been other close calls as well. Out of 55 total Presidential elections, there has been an electoral failure rate of 1 in 14 elections. ĭivergence between the popular vote and the Electoral College vote has occurred three times before: in 1824, 18. Bush but Bush won the Electoral College vote and became President. In the presidential election of 2000, 500,000 more votes were cast for Al Gore than for George W. The primary criticism flows from the fact that the system allows for the election of a candidate who receives fewer votes than his or her opponent. Over the years, the Electoral College has been much criticized. Third, it seems clear that the Electoral College was proposed, instead of the direct election of President, out of concern among slaveholding states that direct democracy would allow the more populous Northern States to out-vote the South in the election of President. So understood, the Electoral College was seen as an institution of informed and knowledgeable voters. In this regard, Professor Akhil Reed Amar has observed that “he Founders believed that although voters in a given state would know enough to choose between leading state candidates for House races and for the governorship, these voters might well lack information about which out-of-state figure would be best for the presidency.” Second, it has been suggested that the Electoral College was devised not so much out of concern about “democracy per se” but out of concern about “democracy based on inadequate voter information.” First, it has been suggested that the Electoral College is one of the several mechanisms, devised by the framers, to achieve a system of checks and balances as a limitation upon the excesses of pure majoritarianism. The Electoral College, as a method of electing the President, is said to have rested upon several considerations. The compact would not take effect until enough states have signed on to account for the necessary 270 electors. If 270 electoral votes are pledged in this manner, the winner of the popular vote will be elected President. (Maine and Nebraska split their electors.) This proposed legislation would have New York enter into a National Popular Vote Compact of states that would instead pledge their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. There are 538 total electors, representing 535 voting members of Congress and three for the District of Columbia.Ĭurrently, all but two states pledge their electors to the candidate that receives the most votes in that state. The Constitution further authorizes each State to decide how their electors will vote. Under this provision each State is entitled to cast votes “equal to the number of Senators and Representatives” of that State. Under Article II, Section 1 to the Constitution, the President is elected by an Electoral College. S.4208/A.489 would add New York as a signatory to the “Agreement Among the States to Elect the President by Nationwide Popular Vote.” The NYCLU supports this bill. ![]() |
